So you want to Big Chop

13 Oct

So you want to Big Chop and don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips that might help you cross over to the Knotty side and smooth your journey

Do research! Big Chopping is a big deal. You need to make sure you know what you are getting into. Research stylists and products that you may want to use after you chop. Research hair styles and hair cuts so you’re not completely clueless after you get your new cut.

Talk to people Don’t be afraid to reach out to other people for support. Tell your friends, husband, kids, whoever that you are thinking about doing the Big Chop. Hopefully, they will support your decision. If not, ask the natural woman at work about her journey. If you didn’t know, naturals LOVE to talk about natural hair, so it won’t be awkward

Be Realistic A lot of people chase after a “dream curl” but lets face it, not everyone was born with curly/wavy when wet hair and that’s OK. All hair textures are beautiful. Just be prepared that when you cut off the relaxed ends, your hair texture may not be what you thought it would be. Learn to embrace it and you will soon fall in love with your newly natural hair

Use the internet The internet can be your best friend when going natural. There are so many natural hair websites, blogs, and forums, the amount of information you receive will be endless. & don’t even get me started on YouTube. If you are more of a visual person, I’m pretty sure someone has been through what you are going through and already has a video on it. Some of my favorite women who have Big Chopped are

Just to name a few

Get excited A lot of women are really attached to the their hair so get yourself really excited. Pump yourself up like you just won a trip to the Bahamas (wouldn’t that be nice). The more excited you are the less anxious or hesitant you will be.

Just do it I’m a spur of the moment type of gal myself. One day you might wake up and say, what the hell. I’m going to Big Chop my hair today. Just do it. The less time you have to the think about it the less time you have to say what am I getting my self into.

I hope these tips helped you like they helped myself when I Big Chopped back in 2010. Here at Knotty Girl we love Big Chops, so if you would like to be featured under or Don’t Stop Big Chop section please feel free to email us at and make Don’t Stop Big Chop the subject

Stay Knotty;)
